COVID-19 Notice

Borrowing Eligibility

Anyone may use materials from the shelves within the David L. Rice Library. Materials are loaned only to borrowers who present a valid ID.

Students, Faculty and Staff must present their USI Eagle Card. Cap students are considered USI students but have a specialized card that is issued by the library. Summer theater employees are treated as staff while they are on the USI campus.

Non-USI affiliated patrons are welcome to borrow books, but they will need to present a valid state or federal photo ID. We classify these users as Courtesy patrons and issue a card that is valid for one year from the date of issue. Visiting professors and ALI (Academic Libraries of Indiana) reciprocal borrowing participants are also considered Courtesy patrons. All other requests will be determined by the Circulation Manager.

Loan periods vary depending on the type of material and the borrower. There are some item restrictions for Community members. Books may be renewed two times. Borrowers will receive an email courtesy notice a few days prior to the due date. They can be renewed on-line by logging into the library home page, clicking on Library Catalog and locating the  "My Account" tab. Once books are overdue, they must be brought to the library to be renewed.

Exceptional Circumstances Policies

Bankruptcy Policy
  • If a student reports to the library that they have filed for bankruptcy, they must present proof of the filing. When proof has been presented, we will waive any overdue fines or processing fees. If they have non-returned items on their account, we will not waive any fines or holds until the items are returned. Each case will be reviewed individually.
Stolen Item Policy
  • If a student reports that their car, backpack, etc. was stolen and it contained library materials, they must present proof of a Police report or Public Safety report to verify the incident. When proof has been presented, we will forgive the processing fees and will evaluate and may forgive the replacement fees. We will not waive replacement costs for tablets or laptops.
Deceased USI Family Policy
  • If it has been reported to the library that a member of the USI family has died, we will waive all fines and fees and remove any charged items from the patron's record. Items will be considered lost. We will accept items if they are found and returned at a later date.
