Evaluating Scholarly Books

Here are some thoughts to keep in mind when evaluating books for credibility and relevance to your research:

  1. Who is the author?
    1. Are they a scholar? A journalist? An eye-witness?
    2. Does the nature of your research require a specific type of author?
  2. When was the book published? Have there been substantial changes to the field, or have widely accepted interpretations changed since the publication date?
  3. Who is the publisher? Is it an academic press? Are they known for publishing works in the discipline or field?
  4. Are there any book reviews available (from relevant journals)?
