Library materials - ebooks, journal article, streaming film, etc. - are licensed for use by all students, faculty, and staff at USI. These items are not "free" from copyright; they are still protected. But our subscriptions provide a license for most educational uses of the material. You can provide students with links to library material with confidence that they have full, legal access.
Best practice for providing access to library material is to provide a link or iframe rather than uploading the content. This ensures that we still have a license to the content across different semesters. It also allows the Rice Library to track usage for the entire class, not just your one-time download, which is an important consideration in subscription continuation. Many databases provide a permalink on the record that is stable and includes the USI proxy for off-campus access.
If you need assistance in developing a permalink or iframe, finding content in library resources, or have a question about library resources and services, feel free to contact Rice Library Research Services or reach out directly to Laura Bernhardt (RCoB), Becca Neel (CNHP), Kate Sherrill (LA), or Shane White (Pott).
