Social Work 341: Social Welfare Policy

This guide suggests print and online resources to help put together the Policy Paper for this course.

Try it! Encyclopedia of Social Work

Using the Encyclopedia of Social Work, look up "food insecurity". This phrase describes a social problem. From the first resulting article "Hunger, Nutrition and Food Programs", note the definition of the problem. Name 5 effects of food insecurity on children. What are some programs created to address it [note that the article still refers to the Food Stamp Program, now known as SNAP]? Name three major programs. What are some of the social work roles in helping with food insecurity?

Now look up the social problem or program you are going to write about, and if you find good information, email it to yourself.

Try it! The Green Book

Using the Green Book find out when the TANF program replaced AFDC. What is now the governing law behind TANF? What is TANF's purpose? In addition to block grants addressing child poverty, what do its competetive grants fund?

Now, find the Additional Tables and Figures under Social Security. How many people age 65 and older relied on Social Security for 50-59 % of their income in 2010?  How many for 100%?

Now go back to the home page of the Green Book to see if it has any chapters related to the program you will write about.  Either bookmark its URL or simply return to this LibGuide for future use.

Try it! Indiana Family and Social Services Administration

Go to the webpage for Indiana's Dept. of Family Resources Find the link for "About TANF."

Read about eligibility requirements. Describe the responsibilities of an applicant or recipient of TANF benefits in Indiana.

What is the limit of gross monthly income for a family of three, in order to be eligible?
