HP 211 Comparative Health Care Systems

This guide supports research for the HP 211 project to compare the health care delivery systems of Canada, Ireland, Germany, the UK, Japan, Australia, and Russia, with that of the U.S.

How Do I Get to the Databases?

From the library's home page click on the link for Databases. There is an A-Z list, and there are discipline lists. If you choose the Nursing and Health Professions list, you're ready to start with CINAHL. For the ABI Inform database, either choose it from the alphabetical list, or from the Business list. Other databases you could search are Health Business or Academic Search Premier.

CINAHL Database

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health) is the premier nursing and allied health database. It allows you to search using specific tags, called subject headings. This results in articles that are about the topic- it's not just mentioned, but is the focus.  Each of the seven country names can be searched as a subject heading. There are two other subject headings to add: "health care delivery"  or "national health programs."

There's a specific way to designate these terms to be used. You have a dropdown menu right of the text boxes. Select MW Word in Subject Heading. So the first line of your search could be "health care delivery" while the second line would be the country you've chosen. Then change the dropdown for each line to MW Word in Subject Heading. Click the box for Full-text. You can also check off Peer-reviewed for the scholarly articles. See the pdf below for a screen shot.

Another recommended subject heading is "quality of health care".  Exchange this for "health care delivery" and do the search again. There will be some overlap, but plenty of additional articles.

To recap, these are headings to try:

  1. "health care delivery"
  2. "national health programs"
  3. "quality of health care"
