Chicago Manual of Style Resources

Chicago Basics

NoteThe Chicago Manual of Style supports two different citation models:

  • author-date (typically used in the physical and social sciences, much like APA)
  • notes and bibliography (more commonly used in the arts and humanities, as well as in some of the social sciences)

As you look for citation guidance, be sure to find out which citation model your work requires and search specifically for the guidance that applies to that model.

Citation Generators

Caution: Citation generators are terrifically convenient, but they can't do everything. Always check your citations against the manual or some other citation guide in order to make sure that they have been formatted correctly. Using a citation generator doesn't free you from having to know the style -- it just makes it possible to put citations together more quickly.
