This guide provides you with a basic outline of how to do research, from choosing a topic to citing your sources in the final draft. Remember to always ask a reference librarian if you need any help with your research

What is Academic Integrity?

"Put simply, this expectation requires each student to do his or her academic work without recourse to unauthorized means of any kind." -USI Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook

Academic Dishonesty includes the following:

1.  Cheating

2.  Fabrication (Making up information)

3.  Plagiarism

4.  Interference (Interfering in any way with another student's work)

5.  Facilitating Academic Dishonesty

What is Plagiarism?

The USI Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook defines plagiarism as any time students, "intentionally adopt or reproduce ideas, words, or statements of another person without acknowledgment."

"A student must give due credit to the originality of others and properly reference the following:

  1. Quoting another person’s actual words;
  2. Using another person’s ideas, opinion, or theory;
  3. Borrowing facts, statistics, or other illustrative material, unless the information is common knowledge."
